How bad is the canal?
Really bad according to David Stix Jr. .. Hazen water has already been shut off. Fernley and Fallon are also in line for some bad times this summer because of no water flowing through the canal. Meanwhile, the City of Fernley is raising water rates to try to make bond payments on a multi-million water treatment plant.

Senator Harry Reid has done little for the Newlands Project even after a devastating flood on January 5, 2008 when 1500 people were evacuated from the cold waters. Reid stated at the time "It is my opinion that it was the negligence of the federal government to have this breach to occur." He also stated, "Our immediate goal is to fix the breach, survey the entire 32-mile canal for potential seeps and correct them quickly in order to insure for public safety. The canal will not be reopened until we have completed this." .. That statement was in 2008 before his re-election and after 3 years Senator Reid has done little to nothing to correct the problem except throw blame at another agency.

As of March 22, 2011 the Truckee Canal is still on hold and dry as a bone.

There has been partial reporting on this ongoing issue from the Fallon newspaper, and little or inadequate coverage from the ever shrinking Fernley newspaper.

Who is TCID and what are they suppose to be doing?
Information from their own website states

• TCID is a political subdivision of the State of Nevada organized, and chartered in 1918 for the purpose of representing the water right holders within the boundaries of the Newlands Project in connection with the operations of the Project. The District was formed, and is paid for, by landowners within the boundaries of the Newlands Project who own water rights appurtenant to their land, which water rights the federal government is obligated, both contractually and statutorily, to serve. As a result, TCID's first and fundamental obligation is to the farmers who are its constituents-promoting their rights and defending their interests with respect to the operations of the Newlands Project.
