My name is Savannah Tapia and I am an 8th grade student at Fernley Intermediate School located in Fernley, NV. Two of my fellow classmates and I have competed in a statewide history competition involving more than 2000 students at regional and state levels and have won the honor, to represent Northern Nevada at the National History Day (NHD) competition at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 15-19th, 2008.
We are seeking your support to provide the opportunity for Cassandra Gomez, Josiah Schotborgh, and Savannah Tapia to shine like Nevada silver and to demonstrate the high academic level of our Fernley students.
National History Day is a nationally acclaimed, academic enrichment program that promotes the study of history in our schools. NHD does for history what the Science Fair does for Science.

Each year students, like us, create exhibits, documentaries, performances and papers about a topic that is related to the chosen annual theme. This year’s theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” Cassandra and I won 1st place in the Junior Division-Group Performance with our topic “The Outer Space Treaty.” Josiah took home the 1st place award for his web-site design in the Junior Division. While researching our subjects we learned a great deal of interesting information. If you would like to take a look at Josiah’s project please visit his web-site at www.sketchfoot.com.
Our participation in the NHD contest DEPENDS on whether we can raise an estimate of $8000 dollars in sponsorships and fund raising efforts to cover our travel expenses as well as lodging while at the competition. Some of our fundraising activities are sponsorships, roast beef sale, selling root beer floats at various city events, and a pie in the face contest.
We hope our Fernley neighbors and surrounding communities will assist us with a portion of this cost. We are also contacting other city and community services with this request. Our contest must be paid for no later than May 30, 2008.
We believe that attending the National History Day Contest will contribute to our education with the participation of students from across the United States which can only broaden our knowledge of our nation’s history. The contest will also give us a chance to show the rest of the nation what may be the future leaders from Fernley Nevada
Thank you for you time and consideration.
Savannah Tapia
