Start revving up for an outstanding season of dirt track events at the Clay Oval at Reno-Fernley Raceway, Nevada’s premiere motor sports venue, with Test & Tune events Sunday, March 29 and Sunday, April 5.
Those days are just a teaser for the 2009 race season which starts with a blow out Double Header weekend April 17-18 featuring TWO exciting nights of IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stock, Hobby Stock, Dwarfs, Pro4, Pure Stock Minis and Rat Mods. (See schedule below)
“Bringing IMCA Racing to the Clay Oval on Friday nights is HUGE. This is brand new to this market and it means the racer chasing IMCA points can race twice in one weekend right off the bat,” said Ty Erquiaga, of Nevada Motorsport Productions, the company that will manage and promote the 2009 season at RFR’s Clay Oval in Fernley, NV. The International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) sanctions races throughout the United States.
Nevada Motorsport Productions has set an exciting format for “Fast Friday Nights” and “Saturday Night Super Shows” from April to October.
“We’re really gearing up for a great season of championship dirt-track racing for a wide range of events including Motorcycle/ATV Flat-Track races,” Erquiaga said.
Drivers put speed and skill to the test on Fridays in IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stock, Hobby Stock and Dwarfs racing. Saturdays feature an innovative mix of motor sports ranging from an eight round Motorcycle/ATV Flat-Track series to the totally new “TUFF CUP 4x4 Challenge”.
“The Nevada Racer ‘TUFF-CUP 4x4 Challenge’ is an innovative hybrid, man-made race course of rock, high roller style jumps and Supercross-style berms for off road trucks, buggies, motorcycle and ATV racers,” said Erquiaga. “The best way I can describe this is like old school Mickey Thompson stadium racing meets Rock Racing or Tuff-Truck Racing on steroids.”
Round One will be at the June 11-14 Octane Fest in Fallon. Rounds Two through Five will be at the Clay Oval at RFR.
Also new at the RFR Clay Oval this year: Lower prices with budget-friendly general admission tickets for just $7 with discounts for children and seniors that’s a price not seen in many years, promoters said.
Starting off, the “Test & Tune Sundays” give racers a chance to put their equipment on the track before the regular season starts in April,” said Erquiaga. Gates open at noon for both Sunday events with Hot Laps from 1 6 p.m., he said. Regular season races are at 7 p.m. on Fridays and 6 p.m. on Saturdays, with prelims and hot laps earlier.
Nevada Motorsport Productions, producer of Octane Fest 2009 and a long-time northern Nevada Motocross promotions company run by Erquiaga and partner Robert Daly, took over the Clay Oval operations and promotions earlier this year.

Running events at RFR’s Clay Oval is a natural for Nevada Motorsport Productions founders Erquiaga and Daly who have more than 40 years of combined professional racing experience.
Daly, RFR Clay Oval race director, spent years involved in special events and stock car racing at venues that include Sears Point, Antioch and Altamont Raceways. He helped launch The Nevada Mud Racing Association. Erquiaga, a Churchill County High School graduate, raced on the Professional Motocross circuit. He now promotes and runs racing events through Nevada Motorsport Productions.
