January 2011 Volunteer of the Month
A special congratulations to Mr. Kay Johnson. He has been chosen as our January volunteer of the month.
Kay has lived in Fernley since 1955. Prior to that he lived in Reno, Fallon, and was born in Logan UT on 7/23/28.
Kay has been volunteering here at the senior center so long he does not even remember when he started. As he say’s “time flies when you are having fun” he has been a volunteer for over 60 years with the church, Boy Scouts, and the Fernley Swimming pool.
Here at the senior center Kay spends his time helping out in the Thrift and Gift. He repairs things, brings in donations. Empties the trash, and smile’s and is cheerful with all of our customers. He is here 5-10 hours a week. Kay became a volunteer to try and help others and to meet new people.
His favorite thing about volunteering is and I quote,” I get to work with all of the cute grandmothers in the thrift store” And that is Kay’s humor in a nutshell!!!
Kay has his Marilyn, their dog Dolly Berry. They also have an amazing number of Grandchildren. 27 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren! Wow!!!
Kay was a Fisheries Biologist before he retired. He worked for the NV. Dept. of Wildlife for 331/2 years.
Kay say’s look around and see who can use a helping hand. Ask friends, Join service organizations. Try to do a good turn for someone daily.
Kay we appreciate your smile, humor and helping hand each day here at the Fernley Senior Center.
