April 2011 Volunteer of the Month
Carol St. Thomas has been chosen as April’s Volunteer of the Month.
Carol has lived in Fernley for eight years. Prior to moving here she lived in South Lake Tahoe and southern California. Carol has been a volunteer here at the Fernley Senior Center for 7 years.
Her specific job duties include Monday Night Bingo, fundraising, financial reports, party planning, maintaining the Memorial Board, miscellaneous office jobs, auctioneer, lemon pie maker, song writer, creative guru, and Happy Birthday Song Leader! She volunteers about 20 hours a week.
Carol say’s the easiest way to figure it out is to figure out how much time she actually spends at home.
Carol became a volunteer by some lady asking her if she would help at Monday Night Bingo.. “all I had to do was write down names. I don’t know what happened but it grew into much, much more.”
Her favorite thing about volunteering is, “I have a very quiet husband and I love to talk. Sure enough the Senior Center is the best place if you want to chat. When you talk to people you learn something new almost every day. I even met someone I had lived across the street from 30 years ago. I also enjoy being able to plan games for the parties we have.
Carol has her hubby Ron and has been married for 40 plus years. Carol has 2 daughters Lori and Julie, 2 granddaughters Alyssa and Haley, and her first great granddaughter Sophia.
Her profession before retiring was as a bookkeeper, office manager, and antique store owner.
Carol say’s hurry up and become a volunteer because she is getting tired. Seriously Carol say’s if you have an interest volunteer to do something you like. If you offer to set tables or wash dishes and you do not like to it’s not going to work. If you love to decorate or greet people volunteer for that- like what you are volunteering for- it makes all the dif
