FINALLY! EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE!

2008 Lyon County Fly-In

Submitted by Maxine Nietz

The 2008 Lyon County Fly-In continues a thirteen year tradition of bringing aviation opportunities to the youth of our area. The Fly-In is being held on Armed Forces Weekend, May 17 & 18, 2008, at the Silver Springs/Lyon County Regional Airport. Pilots from throughout the west fly in for the day or weekend to showcase the planes that many of them built by hand. This year’s theme is “Kids in Aviation.”

Attendees can set their chairs on the flight line to watch and enjoy flight demonstrations, fly-bys, rocket displays, model planes, military and antique planes, and a search & rescue demonstration by NAS Fallon Search & Rescue. The Fly-In allows the public to get up close and personal with pilots who build and fly their own planes and talk directly with pilots, builders, and restorers of military, antique and ultra-light aircraft. Youths between 8 and 17 years old can enjoy the "Young Eagles" program where we take young people aloft free of charge for their first off-the-ground experience, with the goal of creating a life-long interest in aviation and related fields. Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 403 will be flying our Young Eagles in RV6, Velocity, Cherokee, Arrow and Piper Colt planes.

On the ground, we have the Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal team, vendors selling food, beverages and souvenirs. The US Post Office will offer a collector’s item – a Lyon County Fly-In Postal Cancellation -- one for each day.

Opening Ceremony, Saturday at 10 AM, will a color guard from the N. Nevada Veterans Assn.  Watch for the Rocket display at the conclusion. A great patriotic way to start a great weekend.

The Fly-In is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a pancake breakfast each day, free to pilots who fly in, from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Around 2 dozen crafts and food booths are open all day, too. Fun kid’s activities include kite flying, balsa plane flying, tube rockets, climbing wall, bounce house and more…

Our raffles have super prizes, including two round-trip tickets to anywhere SouthWest Airlines flies, a Dell Palm Pilot, and many more great items. Visit our web site to see the list of raffle prizes grow.

We are expecting over 3,000 attendees, making the Fly-In one of Lyon County’s largest events. We still have room for more vendors and, of course, we welcome any volunteers.
