FERNLEY RHYTHM

December 4, 2005
By J France

It's quite amazing when you think of the growth in the Town of Fernley in the past 5 years. Also staggering are the backgrounds of some of the people who have chosen to make Fernley their home.

One such person is Floyd Sneed, better known as the original drummer for Three Dog Night, who became a resident of Fernley in 2003.

Within this 6 foot stature dwells a warm personality and depth of character uncommon to most. His music reflects a visionary style and a true master of his craft.

He can remember, as a child in Calgary, hearing trains pass in the night much like Fernley. "We lived by the tracks" said Floyd.

And why Fernley you ask? Like most of the new residents here it was to escape the craziness and absurdity of California living and just getting back to basics.

A MAN - HIS MUSIC - HIS PASSION

Floyd was born November 22, 1943 to Napoleon and Willa Sneed and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Being raised around music Floyd became interested in drums at a very young age. His sister Maxine (Chong) bought him his first set of drums when he was 19 and he set out to join his first band, which happened to be "The Tommy Chong Band".

After several years Floyd started his own band "Heatwave" and moved to Los Angeles in 1966

Floyd was recruited by Three Dog Night while playing at the "Red Velvet" on Sunset Blvd.

He later was noted as the "heartbeat of the band".

Floyd played with TDN from 1968 to 1976, then again from 1980 to 1985. In total he had 22 Top 40 hits and four No. 1 hit singles with the band.

"One" became the bands first Top Ten hit in 1969, while "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" hit number one a year later. "Joy to the World" became the groups biggest hit in 1971, spending six weeks on top of the pop charts, and continued with their final number one, 1972's "Black and White".

14 Platinum Albums were produced during Sneeds time with Three Dog Night

  • "Three Dog Night" (1968)
  • "Suitable for Framing" (1969)
  • "Naturally" (1970)
  • "Harmony" (1971)
  • "Seven Separate Fools" (1972) "
  • "Around the World with Three Dog Night" (live) (1973)
  • "Cyan" (1973)
  • "Hard Labor" (1974)

Floyd formed "K.A.T.T." in the 1990's, which included Joe Schermic and Ron Johnston.

HIS LIFE TODAY

Floyd now is in the process of expanding his present band "Old Dog - New Trix" and will be recording more dynamite tunes in the near future at Record Music Giant located in Tahoe.

You can find him at EJ's Jazz Club in Reno on Wednesdays along with providing music lessons on drums at Sparks Music Store in Fallon, NV.

Floyd is now and always been a strong advocate for keeping music instruction and performing arts available for todays youth.

Floyd Sneed - His Life Today

Due to some recent booking changes, Floyd's band, "Old Dog - New Trix", is available for hire this month. For more information and booking call Floyd's manager Alison Farrage, at 925-413-4171 or you can send an e-mail request online at his site.

Floyd continues to dynamically express himself on the drums with his new band "Old Dog - New Trix". But off-stage, the multi-talented Floyd expresses himself on canvas. Floyd is also an accomplished artist whose work is on display in various places around Reno, NV.

Earlier this year Floyd performed and attended a fundraiser at Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center at Incline Village. He donated 20 percent of the profits from the sale of his oversize painting, "Gold Coast," to the high school art program.
