Moe Royels is back, and he's re-opening Mary & Moe's Wigwam Restaurant this Friday at 5:00 a.m. All the western and American Indian artifacts plus a few more will be back on display. Old is new all over again.
Mary and Moe Royels have been a staple in Fernley since 1964 when they expanded the Dainty Cone that was started by Mary in 1961 to an indoor dining facility . The Wigwam Restaurant and Museum was established in 1984 and has been host to families, dignitaries and a general meeting place for the community to get together over coffee and great home style food.
The Wigwam was the only place in town where you could get plate sized pancakes.
As the story goes, the ranchers would frequent the Wigwam and wanted a big breakfast. When asked how they wanted their pancakes, the reply was "as big as the plate". Up until the buyout, Moe's pancakes stayed that way and will no doubtedly will be back when the Wigwam reopens. And that group of ranchers and other men from town that arrived at the center table of the restaurant daily before 6 a.m. will again have that place to “meet each day over coffee and breakfast to solve the problems of the city and the world.”
Moe stated that many of the employees that worked for him would be back and would include a few new faces too. He also said customers will find the original menu along with some mighty fine ribs added to the menu.
Moe's popularity has not wavered with Fernley residents even after the two year break when Holder Hospitality Group bought the place and tried to make a go of it. The buzz about town now is the re-opening of the Wigwam with Moe at the helm.
Holder Hospitality Group bought the Wigwam in 2005 after purchasing the Truck Inn. Since that time the Truck Inn closed it's casino, bars, restaurant and motel June 13, 2008 with the Wigwam failing as well and boarded up in January of 2009.
After Moe repurchased the Wigwam many employees and friends showed up to get the place back in shape. Moe told us they all refused payment. They were just happy to help.
Rumor has it that a grand re-opening is planned for sometime in May.
