(The following in no way is meant to give the impression that charities, foundations and individuals should not be encouraged to help the needy where feasible....)
Back before and after the turn of the 20th century, from around 1860 through 1930's, a movement called Eugenics became popular in this country and worldwide for that matter. It stemmed from Darwin's book "Origin of the species" but is as old as Plato. Most of the proponents called for selective marriages (encouraging the young to marry an intelligent partner, selective breeding, etc.). Others, such as Hitler and the demise of the movement's popularity, pre-decided which race (blond, blue eyed Germans) was the best and began a pogram to exterminate those who didn't fit in.
The most recent and well known was the quota system in China, where those to be married have to be tested and anyone who may produce offspring which are "defective" can't even try. This was the result of a law passed in the 1990's.
When the West saw the horrors inflicted on Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and just about anyone else who fell into disfavor by Hitler and his Schutzstaffen during his reign, the West was so disgusted that while some scientists and followers continued to try to promote Eugenics, it quickly fell into disfavor and was replaced in this country by a new federal fervor of Dysgenics, a non-acknowledged Federal program which actually supports the production of idiots, the infirm, the deformed and diseased.
As usual, the West overeacted to a perceived bad idea (Eugenics) with a "kinder, gentler" type of program (Dysgenics), which continues to this day to provide tax supported programs for those who are a drain upon society while those with some kind of promise are left dangling in the wind.
There are tax supported programs for the disabled, those without a brain in their head, those who have no work ethic at all and are leeches upon society, the ones suffering from disease, those who are aged, and the homeless wretches who plague our cities demanding more handouts from passersby (apparently sucking the life out of those of us who have worked all our lives through taxes isn't enough for them).
There are tax supported programs for the drug addicts, winos, the obese, and just about everything under the sun which will eventually lead to having more drug addicts; winos; obese; idiots; disabled; and leeches while those who DO have a spark of intelligence aren't helped at all, not even college tuition, and those who DO have a good work ethic and have made something of themselves are castigated by those who haven't made any attempt to improve themselves as "The Haves" while they, of course, are "the Have Nots".
Kids are labled with imaginary diseases like ADHD allowing their parents and teachers to put them on Ritalin so as to remove the responsibilty of parenting and teaching them.
And to top that off we have the drug companies continually telling us that we have a new disease and must get treatment, while attorneys who advertise are constantly trolling for somebody, ANYBODY, to sue as long as the person to be sued has money.
And so we, the United States, are seeking to destroy ourselves by making everyone who is defective a hero and lauded by the press, while making those who actually produce something out as the bad guy and taxing them into oblivion.
And so it's no wonder that Corporations are leaving our shores destined for tax havens, it's no wonder we have a multi-trillion dollar trade deficit, and it's no wonder that kids of today think they're more likely to either make a fortune at sports or by winning the lottery than by entering the work force.
What happened to the idea that people are responsible for themselves and should make the best out of what God gave them? What happened to the idea that the elderly should be taken care of by their children and not farmed off to a nursing home? When did all problems become the governments and not the individuals?
When a country allows illegal aliens to have more chance of getting into college than it's own citizens by giving is state tuition benefits to them while denying those benefits to kids from neighboring states; when excellence is frowned upon in schools as unfair to those who didn't do as well at school and the whole country is more concerned with what's on TV than what congress is up to; when lobbyists are given more consideration by Congress than those who elected them and we continue to deny excellence in any form while promoting the diseased, the insane, the addicted and the malformed through our tax dollars, and when there is a blending of classes making little difference between the middle and lower classes, we have the gun to our head and are just attempting to get up the courage to pull the trigger.
Democracies have historically lasted 200 years before implosion. We've managed that and more. Not much more, but 30 plus years or so.
And so the John Adams quote isn't so far fetched as it would appear at first blush. Unless something drastic happens and soon, we'll be just another third world country in the upcoming years.
