A Matter of Perspective
The Socialization of this country is in full bloom and not many people seem to notice.
As with anything, if you give something to someone on a regular basis that person soon begins to expect it. And when that something isn't enough to pay for everything the person wants he'll either get a job or ask for more. The politicians, being sharp cookies, saw this as a little problem which was easily solved. So they provided more, and the masses were not only kept happy but kept in their place. And after a generation or two of things being provided by the government, the politician who promised the most got elected or re-elected. And on and on.
So the socialization of America has turned this country into a sniveling crowd of people all shouting at once "where's mine?" at the government. And this country, which began as a lot of individual nation-states bound loosely together by one central government, has slowly evolved into one nation under what?
Not God, the courts took care of that. And so the Government has rushed in to fill His spot. And now the Feds control nearly every aspect of our daily lives.
But way back when the constitution was drawn up the rights which the constitution gave to the government were very limited. The 10th amendment stated that ALL RIGHTS NOT DELEGATED TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BELONG TO THE STATES OR THE PEOPLE. And the constitution gave very little in the way of rights to the Federal Government. Now THAT's a thing of the past, the Federal Government is, well, the Government. And THEY control all, don't they?
Lincoln took care of that little problem when he declared war on the states which wanted no part of a government which took too much power away from those states. Yes, I'm no fan of Lincoln either. Slavery was on the way out whether there was a war between the states or not.
So where did this country go wrong? Well, in my opinion, it was a combination of Lincoln with his war of attrition against states rights, FDR and his social programs, finished off by Johnson and his Great Society. Between them and their war against the individual and Federal Government growth, it was the beginning and end of the individual AND responsibility for ones actions. And thus a lot of citizens have devolved into a group of whining voters who will vote for someone, ANYONE, who promises to give them more.
And what is it that those of us who work do much more than those of us who don't? We control the size of our families. The ones who are on the government dole do not. So they are growing in numbers while the ones who are paying for their room and board are shrinking in numbers.
- And THIS in only the last 60 years.
- It doesn't bode well for the future.
"Those who see their lives as spoiled and wasted crave equality and fraternity more than they do freedom. If they clamor for freedom, it is but freedom to establish equality and uniformity."
-- Eric Hoffer
(1902-1983) American author, philosopher, awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
Apparently the politicians took heed of Hoffer's words . They will eventually give us ALL equality. No one rich, no one better than the other. No one having anything better or more than their neighbor. No one wanting to advance at work because there will be no reward. Everything the same. No one with ambition, but all of us with desire which the government can't fullfill.
